“A book must be the axe that smashes the frozen sea within us.” -Kafka
As meaningful as we English teachers want to make reading to our students, the reality is that when everyone is reading the same book, not everyone can connect. The result is often disengaged students and “fake reading.” On the other hand, letting kids direct their own path as readers allows reading to come to life for them. This PD session will cover how to be purpose-driven in your approach to choice reading, increase student ownership in choosing books, incorporate choice reading time in your class, conference with students and hold them accountable to reading, as well as address challenges along the way.
