“What makes me happy is when my family is happy because they are my motivation in life.” - Ted Hickey FZN. We can learn a lot about a person’s essence through one quote. But, first we have to listen. “Humans of New York” is a vignette photo journalist project used to capture the essence of a person through the use of their own quote and a photo. At Fort Zumwalt’s August 13th PD Day, I was inspired by a lesson plan idea presented by Sarah Brown Wessling in which she showcased how this “Humans” activity could be used to help students learn valuable dialogue, active listening, and evaluating evidence skills. Most importantly, this project helps to build community. I used her lesson design in my English II class on August 24th, and I wanted to share with you my lesson plan, experience, findings, and artifacts. We will also be creating a real-time “Humans of 146” project so that we can learn about you.
